~ Train's Picasso at the Wheel Summer Tour 2015 rolled through San Diego

VIA EXAMINER.com

The crowd was jumping around and dancing with excitement long before Train’s whistle blew kicking off night 3 of the 40+ dates of Train’s Picasso at the Wheel Summer Tour at Sleep Train Amphitheater in Chula Vista, California on May 23, 2015.

The crowd was bouncing up and down to House of Pain’s song Jump Around as the house lights dimmed and the Train whistle blew causing the already enthusiastic crowd to be even more animated and loud.

Red stage lights and a single backlit spot highlighted guitarist, Jimmy Stafford playing one of his two Ukuleles. Front man, Pat Monahan, made his way into the spotlight kicking off the night with “Just a Memory.” Picking up the pace a bit, “Angel in Blue Jeans” was next, this song is the lead single off their new Album Bulltetproof Picasso released in late summer 2014. Most of the front section was seen singing and swaying along to the song.

After a few more hits, 50 ways to say Goodbye, If it’s Love, Meet Virginia, and Free Pat took a short break allowing the backup singers to fill in for him on vocals. It however wasn’t much of a break, as he jumped on the drums and provided the beat. Pat has some drum skills, but fans prefer him on vocals. The drum interlude was short lived and Monahan found his way back into the main spotlight.

He dedicated the next couple songs to the armed services, Look up to the Sky and Calling all Angels. Calling All Angels became an amazing 15,000+ person sing along with hands raised high in the sky.

Then the young Mermaids and Trainette’s came on stage for their couple minute dance party with Monahan. (You can tell Pat is a parent himself by his interaction with the kids on stage – it’s so adorable.) As the kids exited the stage, he was asking for a little help from his friends. Matt Nathanson, who opened the evening came on stage and sang the cover “With a little help from my Friends.”

Train’s new song “Give it all” is incredible to see live. Not only is Pat giving it his all - you can feel the emotion in his voice. But the lighting director and designer should be given kudos for the design. The lighting to this song encapsulated the mood perfectly. The flickering straight beams of light and the quick blue burst of light in the background is just perfect. Well Done!

"Marry Me" was a bit of a downer. Long time fans are use to having Pat come out into the audience during this song, Most fans have seen impromptu proposals during the song, the lyrics help lead to the proposals. Pat, however, did jump down into the front row barricade and sang from there. It just wasn’t the same.

The night and the hits went on and on for just over 90 minutes. Bulletproof Picasso, an amazing cover of Aerosmith’s Dream On, and their Grammy Award winning Drops of Jupiter finished the evening. The setlist was spot on. The show overall was great – as always. But the energy seemed to slow down by the encore, but that may have been due to the misty rain shower that covered the audience off and on during the night.

Can’t wait to see the next Train show in Southern California. (Kaaboo Festival in September)

VIA EXAMINER.com

Many inner 1990s high school girl hearts were a fluttering, swooning over their celebrity crush. No matter what year you graduated from high school - 1990s or early 2000s - there was a little something for everyone. The Main Event tour brought five “New” Kids that aren’t so kid-like anymore, but more - Hot Damn!!

The New Kids on the Block The Main Event tour rolled through San Diego State University Viejas Arena on Monday May 11,2015. The Main Event Tour included 2 special guest artists, TLC and Nelly. They were the perfect complement to their 1990s pop icon headliner New Kids on the Block.

The three part musical event began with the hot ring girl cruising the stage smiling and laughing with a placard saying “Round 1”. The house lights went down and strobe lights danced through the venue.

The St. Louis rapper Nelly got the audience more than warmed up dancing and swaying to his songs. Some of the audience were seen drooling and looked flush from the heat coming off the stage. As he rapped “Shimmy Shimmy Coco Puff, listen to it loud,” listening proved difficult at times while staring at those arm guns.

Round 2 the ring girl again grabbed the audience attention before the lights dimmed to welcome pop duo T-Boz and Chilli otherwise known as the Grammy winning artists TLC. Under the cover of three huge canopy fans held by back up dancers, the DJ started the first beat while the dancers slowly unveiled the group and a few more back up dancers.

What about your Friends, Ain’t 2 proud 2 Beg, and Baby,Baby,Baby were the first three songs and continued hit after hit for about 45 minutes. The awe struck moment –goose bump moment of the night was one of the last songs, Waterfall. The in the round main event audience was painted in a blue light and nearly everyone in the audience raised their cell phone for a somber lighter moment. At that point the fans and the group were missing the middle of the group, the glue, the “L”, Lisa Lopes - Left Eye.

Round 3, the ring girl proudly strutted her thing, however the audience was anticipating that first glimpse of their school age infatuation. The lights went down and a few white lights shined on the stage. The Main Event - Let’s get ready to rumble announcer introduced the guys. Each walked to the stage under the shield of a black fight robe. Lights flicked off and on then a set of white lights peered down on each before unveiling themselves starting the night.

The New Kids on the Block have aged liked a fine wine – very well. Aye aye yai! As the guys were stripping off the robes the lightweight tight t-shirt showed some amazing washboard abs under there. Jordan ripped his t-shirt off mid show during his solo performance making some of the 40 somethings’ get in a tizzy and their heart flutter even faster. The guy’s performance was outstanding everything the inner high school crazed fans would ask for, to now grow into a sensible adult fan.

The square stage mechanics were amazing offering multi-level Olympic podium risers lifting each member as they sang. The side stages seemed to be rotating while they danced. Although a little over board at some times, the confetti and billowing smoke added another dimension to the show.

VIA EXAMINER.com

After a rainy couple days, the skies opened up long enough for The Piano Guys to perform their musical magic at Humphrey’s by the Bay on Shelter Island in San Diego, California on May 12, 2015. The sun peered out of the overcasts skies to give concert-goers a beautiful sunset to accompany the beautifully played music.

The Piano Guys offer a show musicians and music lovers would admire. The Piano Guys are a group that consist of four guys - 2 primarily - that play piano and cello in very unique ways. They merge their distinctive musical style with current and classical songs with a touch of flair. The flair is a combination of musical prowess and instrument mastery. Who knew a grand piano could be opened up and played by 4 or 5 guys at a time? Check out how.. here. One playing the piano, another keeping beat with either the side of the piano, the piano inner bridge or keyboard cover, and the other two plucking strings inside it. It’s music magic!

They started out as Youtube performers in 2006 by 2010 they were out performing live. Their popularity grew substantially since, over the years they set out to place and play a Grand piano and cello on the most magnificent locales – The Great wall China, on top of slot canyons in Utah, a Hawaiian Beach, and an Ice Castle. Their videos and music are astounding, the production is amazing, and the locations majestic.

If you have never heard of The Piano Guys, check them out on their youtube channel – Here.

Three Days Grace played to a sold out crowd at House of Blues San Diego on April 10, 2015. Three Days Grace is out supporting their fifth studio album HUMAN! that was just released on March 31 2015. They opened the night with their new single “I am Machine” rocking the crowd with an astounding hit after hit 90 minute set.

This new tour is a fan introduction to their new frontman Matt Walst. Matt Walst, formerly from My Darkest Days, joined the platinum selling quartet, Three Days Grace, early last year after Adam Gontier’s departure from the band in 2013.

Don’t think with a new lead vocalist the band has lost its hard-hitting, authentic dark sound. Matt Walst's voice was different then that we're use to but was spot on and he brings an amazing high energy to the stage. Also Three Days Grace’s (3DS) new album HUMAN! and new singles "I am Machine" and "Painkiller" have the same 2003 3DS dark and heavier edge – maybe even more so.

The new album, HUMAN! comes full circle as the band enlisting the help from their 2003 self-titled debut platinum selling album producer Gavin Brown.

For more tour dates see below.

Kicking the night off was South Carolina metal band, Islander. The group released their debut studio album Violence & Destruction in 2014. They also performed on the Mayhem Festival circuit in 2014 to rave reviews. They were listed as the “Ones to Watch” and “Most Anticipated” group by popular music editors. They have also been heavily supported by well-known bands: Korn, Papa Roach, and P.O.D.

The band took the stage with great head whipping , hair flying energy and a good heavy sound. Keep your eyes and ears open: here comes one of the most important metal bands of the year.

Country Music quartet, Lonestar, was truly live and up close for some fans at Sycuan Casino in El Cajon, California Friday March 20, 2015. A few fans were allowed on stage during the night to take selfies and pose for pictures with the band in the mist of the show.

This acoustic concert tour marks Lonestar’s continued success and celebration of their twenty year anniversary. The milestone wasn’t lost on the group as they continually thanked the audience for sticking with them through the years.

The intimate acoustic setup allowed all members playing for and talking to the audience all night. Bar stools were lined up along the front of the stage and back up members were just in the shadows behind them.

Keyboard and vocalist, Dean Sams seemed to be the comedic act for the night telling jokes and stories from the road. Lead vocalist Richie McDonald also got into the storytelling. The Lonestar guys talked about a fan called Cake Man; telling how he brought a cake to them at every show he attended. Dean Sams also talked about the best gift he gave his wife over the years, a belt and a bag. As it turns out, there is a sad and funny twist to the story.

Lonestar played most of their 9 hit singles "No News", "Amazed", "What About Now", "I'm Already There", "My Front Porch Looking In", and "Mr. Mom.

In 1995, Lonestar released their self-titled debut album and their first single, "Tequila Talkin’. This song quickly made it to the Top 10 Country charts. Along with CMA and ACM awards through the years, Lonestar sold over ten million albums earning themselves platinum status with RIAA. They also performed a couple newer song too “Pretty good day” and “Just the Rain.”

Twenty years and still pushing out fan favorite music.

~ San Diego Indiefest showcasing independent music for over a decade.

VIA Examiner.com

Another great San Diego Indiefest for the books. San Diego Indiefest 9 was held on Saturday March 28, 2015 in its new home in the San Diego community of City Heights. The City Heights Community Park and Recreation Center Lawn was host to this year’s event.

SanDiego Indiefest features and celebrates national and local independent musicians, artists, and visual artists. It is always a family friendly and eclectic environment showcasing music, film, art, comedy and local businesses.

An active leader in the San Diego Indie music scene and founder of Say it Records, Danielle LoPresti founded San Diego indie fest over 10 years ago. With a passion for social causes, Alicia Champion teamed up with Danielle Lopresti to create what is now the revolutionary and history making San Diego Indiefest. Over the years the pair has given many artists a platform in which to challenge the belief that music and art must avoid socially conscious topics to be accepted and entertaining.

San Diego Indiefest has grown since its debut in 2004 in the San Diego Community of Bankers Hill. After a few more moves through North Park and Liberty Station this year it settled down in City Heights.

This new location in City Heights offered a more intimate atmosphere and diverse crowd then previous years. A major drawback to this location was the limited number of stages 3 from 4 stages of previous years. That extra stage would allow more experience to new local independent artists and equally more exposure to new fans. Another negative was parking, it was always difficult to find. Bigger visible signs to available Indiefest parking would have assisted in this matter. Just some things to think about for San Diego Indiefest 10.

Can’t wait to see the lineup for next year.

San Diego Indiefest is sponsored by Durga Sound, San Diego’s Local Independent Radio 91X , Today’s Hit Music on Z90.3, MSI Production Services, Rock to Stop Violence and many more.

There were many artists performing through the day. The Durga Sound Main Stage featured many great independent artists whether you like R&B, reggae, electronica, alternative, rock, country even a little latin. There was a little bit for everyone.

New York based group, Bear Hands headlined the night, and local Latin Alternative Rock group, Todo Mundo had the crowd up and dancing. With a fresh urban pop sound, Paige Bryan attracted a new fan base. A Mayfield Affair lead vocalists Erin Lancaster and Ryan Woosley were turning up the folk country charm. The crowd favorite of the night seemed to be local alternative Country rock group, Dead Feather Moon. Dead Feather Moon is a two time winner for Best Alternative Album in 2012 and Best Alternative Band in 2014 at the San Diego Music Awards.

VIA AXS.com

The memorable melodies of the late 1970s started off the night with Northern California six-part band, Con Funk Shun. From their start through the late 1980s, this group had earned 4 consecutive gold and 1 platinum album, including 20 hits singles, eight Top 10 R&B Hits and one #1 R&B single “Ffun” Other poplar hit songs , Sho' Feels Good To Me “Too Tight” and Love’s Train” and “Marry Me Again”. As of late, the band is currently recording a new album “SOUND OF GROWN MEN”.

Next on the bill for the night was Johnny Gill. Johnny Gill was recruited to join the platinum selling group New Edition in 1987 after Bobby Brown was said to be voted out of the group. New Edition’s 1987 Album Heart Break would feature a few hit singles including “Can you stand the Rain” and “If It Isn't Love .” Over time many New Edition members ventured out on solo projects and three joined forces as Bel Biv Devoe. Johnny Gill went on to release his self-titled solo album “Johnny Gill” in 1990. The album quickly took off reaching Number 1 on Billboard’s Top 100 R&B Album and Top 10 Pop Album. Gill’s signature ballad “My, My, My” rapidly reached number 1 on the R&B and Pop single Charts.

Sweet Sensation and former Broadway star, Stephanie Mills supported the night with her power house vocals. Stephanie Mills was cast to play Dorthy in the Broadway play “The Wiz”. There is still much debate as to whether she should have been cast in the big screen adaptation of the same name. Listen to the song “Home” to hear her vocal range and clarity

The night’s DJ had the crowd up dancing to a string of 60s and 70s Soul & R&B hits while the stage crew tackled some technical difficulties and set up issues. Some of these hits included Cherrell’s Saturday Love and Sugar Hill Gang’s Rappers Delight. Close to Midnight The Whispers finally took the stage ready to play their hit songs Rock Steady and the catchy beat of “and the beat goes on”.

VIA AXS.com

Emerging country artist Canaan Smith turned up the party at Dan+Shay’s Where It all Began tour at House of Blues San Diego on March 19. Canaan Smith opened the night with his new song “Hole in a Bottle." This little number energized the crowd wanting to hear more. After a little drinking song, it was time to start the party with his catchy tune “it’s a Party”

Canaan’s new song Stuck was next. It describes how everyone can get hung up at a certain place or person in their life. 2 Lane Road moved the audience through what it’s like to be in a small town and the only place to get lost and alone was on a country dirt road.

It was a “good kinda bad” as Canaan Smith covered Nick Jonas’ Jealous. He slowed down a bit to discover a “Mad Love” for country music before taking a moment of reflection in love, loss and what’s important. The song Bronco was written about his late brother. That blue and white Bronco reminds him of all things about him and that are important. Closing out his set, Canaan rekindled the audience’s energy with his new hit single “Love you Like That”.

The Where It All Began tour brought country pop duo, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney , Dan + Shay to House of Blues San Diego on Thursday March 19, 2015. The CMA and ACM award nominees are out supporting their #1 album Where It All Began with the new third single Nothin’ Like you. Their new album also features singles 19 You +Me and Show you Off.

Be sure to request Dan +Shay’s new single on your local favorite country station or get the album from Itunes HERE.

Special guest american country music singer-songwriter Canaan Smith kicked off the night warming up the crowd for a great night of country music. Canaan Smith article and images can be found here.

Blue lights flood the stage, opening the night, as ear piercing cheers and screams flood the opening music as Dan +Shay hit the stage jumping right into their new song “Somewhere only we know.” Dan+Shay bring their high energy to the audience and the crowd returns it back in a screaming roar, while singing along with the tunes.

Dan+Shay debuted their new song Nothin like you , as well as played their hits 19 You+Me and Show you off. They performed a few great covers: Brooks&Dunns “Red Dirt Road”, Ed Sheeraan’s hit “Thinking Out Loud” and “Anyway You Want It” by Journey. They kept the tempo going all night and didn't let their school night all ages fan goers down. They gave them a show to remember.

Dan + Shay were nominated for CMT’s ACM New Artist of The Year 2015 among the Top 3 finalists: Cole Swindell, Thomas Rhett, Sam Hunt. They also opened for Blake Shelton during his"Ten Times Crazier Tour" last year.

Opening with her tune “I am Not a Pretty girl” Ani DiFranco took the stage with cheers and shrills at House of Blues San Diego Monday night March 16, 2015. Ani DiFranco is out touring in support of her new album Allergic to Water that was released on Nov. 4, 2014.

The progressive folk rock guitarist has had a very active voice for a variety of social movements including feminism, gender equality, cultural and environmental platforms. Her songs echo the same inspiring drive to call out and push to change people’s thinking.

Ani DiFranco has many accolades with 18 studio albums, she has been nominated for a few Grammys, and won a Grammy in 2004 for Best Recording Package, for her album, Evolve. The Best Recording Package award is given for the art and visuals across the entire album package. Other accolades include the National Organization of Women (NOW), Woman of Courage Award in 2006, and the Woodie Guthrie Award in 2009.

Singing and songwriting at young age at the early age of 18 in 1989 Difranco developed her own independent record Label called Righteous Babe Records citing the need “to release her music on her own terms”. Righteous Babe is headquartered in Buffalo, New York and it houses a small venue called Babeville for artists to explore their musical independence.

DiFranco performed many of her other tunes including her Grammy Award nominated single “Shy” Ani and the audience got into the groove with this jazzy, guitar thumping song. Other songs that made the set list for the night were "Dithering," "Swan Drive," "My IQ Poem," and "Untouchable Faces."

U2 Top 5 Memorable Concerts

~ The Top 5 memorable U2 concerts .

VIA AXS.com

After 13 studio albums, 22 Grammy Awards, over 150 million records sold and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, you could say they are one of the world’s biggest bands. But these four guys from Ireland need no big introduction: Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry, because we all know them. They are U2.

Rolling Stone magazine even ranked U2 as one of the top 100 “Greatest Artist of All Time.” For nearly 40 years they have been making great music, campaigning for human rights, and have been a voice for many other philanthropic causes around the world. What’s not to like about them?

As one of the biggest bands of the world, they have toured many places near and far. It is difficult to select just a handful from the best of the best.

  • U2 360° At The Rose Bowl

The U2 360° tour Rose Bowl concert was record breaking in so many ways. The Pasadena, California Rose Bowl Concert was filmed on Oct 25 2009 in front of a sold out crowd of 97,000 fans while 10 million others streamed the live show on YouTube, ranking it in the Top 5 concert performances of all time. This show was the highest grossing single U.S. concert by a single headliner and  “The Claw” stage is one of the largest concert stage constructions ever built.

As a fan, to be at that show to be under that claw was completely “Awe-inspiring.”

U2 was out on tour supporting their new album “No Line in the Horizon.”
U2360° At The Rose Bowl. DVD Released June 2010.

  • U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle

U2 set off on the Elevation tour in 2001 in support of their Grammy Awarding winning “Best Rock Album” All That You Can’t Leave Behind. On September 1, 2001 they performed to a record breaking home crowd at The Slane Castle in Ireland.

  • Sarajevo – PopMart

On September 23 1997, U2 fulfilled a promise to perform in the war torn Bosnia and Herzegovina. The concert in Sarajevo was held at the Kosovo Stadium with Ms. Sarajevo in attendance. U2 wrote the song “Miss Sarajevo” in 1995 in response to the horrific acts taking place during the Siege of Sarajevo. U2’s frontman, Bono, stated he wanted to help those from the area return “life back to normal” after the many years of struggle during the Bosnian war. The near 40,000 attendees came from all over the war torn area, bringing together those that once fought against one another. It was stated that U2 considered this show to be one of their proudest moments.

  • Vertigo Tour in Chicago

In May 2005, U2 took over Chicago for two nights during the Vertigo Tour supporting their How To Dismantle An Atomic Bombalbum to film a DVD. The Vertigo Tour was one of the top grossing shows of all time. They also filmed the U2 3D Concert DVD during the Latin America leg of the Vertigo tour.

  • Rattle and Hum Documentary

One of the pinnacle launching points for U2 was the 1987 Joshua Tree Tour DVD, "Rattle and Hum." "Rattle and Hum" was filmed in 1987 as a documentary of the band as they toured North America. Although it's more of a collection of performances than a documentary, this is considered a fan favorite capturing lifelong fans with every second of the film.

~ Craig Wayne Boyd brings West Bound and Down tour back to San Diego.

VIA AXS.com

The West Bound and Down tour rolled through Southern California again. This time The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, California welcomed Craig Wayne Boyd back to San Diego on Monday March 9, 2015.

Craig Wayne Boyd was in-between dates as the opening act on a nine-show Rascal Flatts Vegas Riot! Residency at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s The Joint. He made the six hour journey down to Southern California giving us another dose of his rebellious country twang.

The night’s performance offered the crowd some great tunes including Southland, cover of George Strait's You Look So Good in Love, Blood, Sweat and Beer, and a cover of Travis Tritt & Marty Stuart’s: Whiskey Ain't Workin' . Craig Wayne Boyd also tried out a new song called “I’m still here.” The unwavering words of don’t give up, because no matter what I’m still here stirred through the air as tear filled eyes can be seen in the audience. An overall very touching song.

Boyd, the Season 7 winner of NBC’s hit TV show The Voice is making the rounds out to his fans across the country. Boyd will be touring through out the year, by October 2015 ending up on the far Northeast coast of Maine. For Dates and locations near you check out the tour dates below.

A perfect complement for the night is Southern California Country Pop artist, Morgan Leigh Band opening for Craig Wayne Boyd. Morgan Leigh’s boot stomping, hair bouncin’, high energy performance got the crowd rallied up for the night.

Morgan Leigh recently tried out for American Idol, but the judges didn’t seem to think her country style was Idol worthy, maybe she should think about following in the footsteps of Craig Wayne Boyd and trying out for The Voice on Blake Shelton’s team.

Morgan Leigh’s vocal range allows singing a variety of covers like Big and Rich’s -Save a Horse (ride a cowboy), “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, and Lady Antebellum’s “American Honey”. She also broke out a few of her own songs including Foolish, Trouble, and a new one about having a girl crush. This song has an interesting vibe and spin. Awesome tune Morgan Leigh Band! Be sure to catch Morgan Leigh Band at Moonshine Flats downtown San Diego on March 27 and March 28 2015.

Get Morgan Leigh Band’s new single "Trouble" out NOW on Itunes and Spotify!

COUNTING CROWS http://www.mismarissa.com/blog/2014/8/counting-crows

COUNTING CROWS

Well, I didn't get approval to shoot this show from the photo pit. I wanted to attend a Counting Crows show since hearing Round Here in 1994. So, I  packed up my camera and headed out to watch a couple horses race and to finally check another concert off my bucketlist.

Since I didn't get credentials I was a little nervous about bringing the camera with me. But from the gate, the stands and walking in to the show with the camera out and in full view (You can't miss a DSLR with a 70-200mm attached)  no one said a word. Now it was time to find a good spot to shoot from the audience.

How I loothe GA Audiences!!

In the many years of always getting photo pit credentials and then just standing off to the side to enjoy the rest of the show I forgot what it was like to be in  the heart of a General Audience stand only crowd.  More on that some other time!

The shows countdown song was Lean on Me by Bill Withers. Counting Crows kicked off the concert with Sullivan Street one of my favorite songs.  In true music photographer fashion, I photographed only the first 3 songs starting out first from stage left, afer having a difficult time  I finally escaped my position,  by song 3 I found my way over to Stage right for a few wide angle shots then to the back where I felt more at home.

The concert was good., Adam sounded great.  and I got to hear a few songs I'd been wanting to hear live. Mr Jones, Omaha, Round Here, A Long December.   My favorite song though is Perfect Blue Buildings not played.

DEL MAR RACE

PINK #8 is a 3 year old filly, named Asparagus! ... A 5-1 odd that won the 10th Race on Saturday August 9th. Gorgeous little girl with her tongue out!! I captured another image of her walking to the gate before the race and again she had her tongue out.
